DAMN!!!

The only two things I hate about being Asian are both drink related. #1 turning red when drinking alcohol #2 Lactose intolerance.
I had to make the painful decision to quit coffee today. Even just the little bit of milk in it fucks me up. I had a cappuccino before school and was hating life all day. Bad stomach cramps and lots of gas. It sucks being in class trying to ignore the pain and suppress farts all day. I'm not hardcore enough to take it black(like my men), I don't like soy in coffee and I'm too lazy to carry around pills with me so I've got to find some other caffeine fix. Red Bull makes me shake which kind of scares me. Any suggestions?
I can still eat cheese, chocolate and ice cream without the cramps but I think eventually I might have to give them up too. Man, that's gonna suck!
Got any lactose intolerance stories?

I used to be pretty lactose intolerant. Couldn't touch most of the dairies but then a couple years ago, I started living on my own and realized that I was in control of the groceries. So of course, I bought pints of ice cream every other day and after eating a bit of ice cream every day, I slowly got over all the cramps and such. Now I can eat cereal like a normal person! W00t!

But yeah, I really disliked the idea of tagging some pills along and whatnot. I just thought, "Screw it."

Yeah, although I don't think I'm all that lactose intolerant. In fact, I can drink quite a bit of milk w/o anything happening but I remember in Junior High, because of my high lactose tolerance, I would drink a lot of milk before school but then during gym, we'd be doing jumping jacks and bloop, I would be farting like there's no tomorrow. That's when'd tighten my butt cheeks and jump not as high. So what you would see would this tall guy (I'm tall) who starts out doing these PRO jumping jacks and then half way, be doing these weak 2 inch up jumping jacks w/ an uncomfortable look on his face (again, my face).

You are not alone with this. I love coffee and had to give it up completly. Now it's back to good old tea which I can drink all day and have no problems.

But if Tse makes the tea I'm up for hours. His stuff is industrial grade.

If you can I'd give up the cheese and ice cream.

I have found a good substitute though. Yeo's brand soy milk. I've tried Mango, Banana, Strawberry, and Melon. The Melon and Mango taste really good.

Good luck on gving up coffee.

usually, i go with soy milk in coffee... and oatscreme instead of ice cream... but it sucks when i travel somewhere where the question, "do you have soymilk?" is recieved with the incredulous looks.

maybe you can switch to those li-hing powder candies? or if you feel like hating yourself, you could always just replace caffeine with nicotine.

try lactose-free milk? not sure what brand(s) you can get in HK, but in australia we get zymil.

or ... if i were in your position, i'd try to acclimatise my body to dairy products — by consuming small quantities several times a day over a period of few weeks. this will apparently train bacteria in the large intestine to break down lactose more effectively. i reckon this ain't just an old wives' tale, i've read about it from somewhere and it apparently has some scientific evidence.

i would never give up my coffee! my love for it is too great!

good luck!

can't drink milk in any liquid form. ice cream is marginal. results ranged from normal to catastrophic fecal control failure. yogurt is always good. it must be them little bacilli!

why not soy milk in your cafe au lait?

I'm a little behind with this comment - not sure if you've found any solutions yet but here's an interesting site to read through if you have time and want too.

Also would sweet condensed milk work? Or it's still milk? Just a thought...

awww thats such a pretty cup of coffee! I wonder how they made it..hmm yeah..being lactose intorrent sucks even though i love the taste of milk. everytime i drink it i feel like puking and/or i have bad cramps..especially in the morning. from the looks of those comments, it's not uncommon to be lactose intorrent. but it sucks cus everyone drinks coffee in the states. literally. every single morning.

Oh man, I totally feel you with the suppressed gas cramp-age. I gotta relax with all my might and fart into my body. I had to endure it for four hours straight during summer session. After classes, I'd leave a cloud of gaseous fumes in my wake from the hallway to the parking lot and all the way home. But this isn't necessarily on account of my LI, I generally fart alot.
